Prep guide for newborn sessions:

Following this guide for your baby's session will help you be as prepared as possible before arriving to the studio.

  • Newborn sessions are typically done within the first couple of weeks of being born. They are more likely to stay asleep and cooperate while being posed, they still like to be curled up, and baby acne is rarely present. After the first couple of weeks, not only are they a bit more fussy but their bones begin to fuse together making it slightly more challenging to pose baby.
  • Please be aware that flash will be used for all photos, but it will not irritate baby or harm them in any way.
  • Appointment times will usually be in the morning around 9/10am.
  • Please bring baby dressed in something that is easily removed without disturbing baby. Try to avoid tight socks or clothing that may leave indentations in the skin beforehand. If you have any outfits you would like baby to be photographed in I will do my best to try and capture them, but please be aware that some outfits will not look good photographed in studio light. I will provide outfit changes/fabrics/swaddles/headbands/etc.
  • Babies sleep best when the room is nice and warm. I will have my studio heated during the time of session.
  • One thing I suggest is to try and keep baby awake before their session so that they are nice and sleepy. Do not feed them until right before we begin the session, or I don't mind feeding the baby as long as he/she is bottle fed. This will keep baby nice and full during their session.
  • If your baby takes a pacifier, be sure to keep in handy. Even if baby does not intend on using one permanently, it is often convenient during pictures to keep baby calm and soothed for the duration they will be taking photos. This is much easier than moving baby each time they need soothed.
  • Your baby will likely need to be fed periodically throughout the session, so please be prepared with plenty of food. Sticking to your feeding schedule the day of the session may not be possible, your baby needs to stay full so he/she can be sleepy. I will help feed baby during the session when needed and only if bottle fed of course. Also, you may want to bring a snack and drink for yourself - newborn sessions can take up to 4 hours! **FOR BREASTFEEDING MOMS- I know some of you are very adamant when it comes to strictly breastfeeding and that's ok! BUT I very strongly suggest that you pump and bring a couple of bottles with you for your session. Breastfed babies tend to cluster feed during sessions making it hard to get them to stay posed because they are constantly crying for more food. When we feed baby from a bottle, we at least know that he or she is getting a lot of food supply to keep that tummy full and keep them sleepy. This will most likely help reduce the length of the session (I know some of you start to get desperate after the first hour or so haha).
  • Because I do not work with an assistant, mom or dad may need to help “spot” baby for some poses. I will ask for help if needed but please keep in mind that I need my space as well. I understand that it is your baby and I will keep them very safe, but I also need to move around a lot and focus on my work so I do ask for parents not to hover over me. This can also interfere with session time because baby will be able to smell and hear mom and dad and want to be held by them instead of me.
  • It's completely okay if baby pees or poos on the props! This is natural and expected as they're only babies. Please do not feel embarrassed when this happens, because they all do it. Any experienced newborn photographer will be completely accepting and expecting of this fact.
  • floors are cleaned before every session because there is a chance I will be sitting on the floor to change or wrap the baby, and I like to keep a clean area for them

I won’t need much assistance during the session so please sit back, relax, and enjoy the little break you'll get!
